The holidays are creeping up on us. The time when we realize the year is quickly ending, when we decorate the tree, sip a latte and make appearances at parties we would never normally attend.
Often times this means bringing a gift for a person you barely know. As you think about what is something everyone can use and what can I give that they won’t know how much I spent? This screams something homemade. Maybe some holiday cookies, divinity, perhaps a meat and cheese tray. Then the thought crosses your mind to give the “traditional” gift of fruit cake.
Please rethink this thought. For those that don’t understand the elements and background, fruitcake is a dense loaf of baked bread filled with the worst elements of trail mix, like dried candied pineapple and dried currants. It’s often very heavy due to all the dense ingredients and burns quite easily. Some say it tastes like an old, chewy bran muffin.
But it’s perhaps the former host of “The Tonight Show,” Johnny Carson, who best determined fruitcake’s place in the modern psyche. Deriding the loaf as a holiday reject, he once claimed that, “The worst gift is fruitcake. There is only one fruitcake in the entire world, and people keep sending it to each other” [source: Village Voice].
When contemplating this idea, please think of the equivalent of this for another holiday. It would be like getting sugar-free candy on Halloween. Chances are this gift with be re-gifted, or end up in the snow bank. Perhaps it will even be used as a door stop.
